Something for the weekend

As you can see these steps are covered in detritus from the pines.

This morning I carefully managed to clear them...

and found these strange objects. They are hollow, with a delicate papery skin and give off a powdery puff if you damage the surface. They look like a cluster of little bells - an inch to two inches in size. I have never seen anything quite like them before but I'll bet someone knows what they are.

Fungus!!

If they were not hollow, I would say a mushroom of some sort. Of course, they may be mushrooms, with a lot of spores inside, just waiting for someone to step on them and release the spores.

I have never seen anything like them either! Weird.

Pat, I was thinking mushroom of some type, I am curious to find out. Please let me know when you get the answer.
Cheers, Sausage...

Earthballs or similar - they're like the big puffballs we used to kick around in fields. They'll have been feeding on the pine needles; I get small brown ones under the conifers at the bottom of the garden.

Judy: they are certainly hollow. I hope they are not damaging to the trees.

Sausage: I will let you know when I'm sure.

Kevin: 'They'll have been feeding on the pine needles;'
This makes them sound alive which troubles me. Are they harmful? I'm not thinking of putting them in an omelette.

Can't help with the mushrooms I'm afraid, however, when it comes to photography...

A guy I knew who would go on expeditions around the world would place a pen or pencil next to any flora he photogaphed so people could instantly get a sense of scale.

Kim: excellent idea - I'll try to remember it.
A random thought - you know the photo of Rogan leaping and lots of shots in motion - as it were?
Could you do the same for a face in motion? Would it be worth an experiment?

Congrats on the "puff." You just successfully helped propagate more mushrooms!

Cheers.

Randall: I'm not sure I want to. They sound as if they could be nasty.

At first I thought, wasps' nests. But both Kevin and JohnG said 'puffballs'.

When I'm not so sleepy, I'll google that, I'm curious too.

GG: I think the boys are right. They often are.

The tricky bit for a face in motion (like a head turning) is it overlaying previous versions. Rogan jumping works because each shot is clear of the other. I could, however, line up a series of faces next to each other with different expressions
