Tiverton

I asked S2 if he knew what this was. 'Stairway to Heaven?' he asked. I believe it is a mounting stair for the gentry to mount htheir horses.

Americans with ancestral piles in Devon? Don't encourage them. This is the sort of behaviour that got the Israelis into the mess they're in now. Unless they were taken away in chains, they must accept they have forfeited all they left behind.

"Tripe at fourpence" - now that's got to be pure Rochdale! Wasn't there a cartoon strip about a tripe dynasty once upon a time?

As for avoiding drunken marauders, it would help if you wouldn't tell Scotsmen like Jimmy Bastard you'd like to be rapt in front of them.

Daphne: don't remember the cartoon strip but tripe was part of my culture. Rossendale rather than Rochdale.
You've got me worried now - rapt looks quite rude. Should it be wrapt?

Your villages are so charming. I wish I had scads of time, money and energy, and I would drive all over England and stop wherever the mood hit me.

Judy: you would need all the patience in the world to do the driving. I'll come with you:)
