National Poetry Day

Aside

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more, day by day,
You tell me of our future that you planned;
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray,
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve;
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad

Christina Georgina Rossetti
1830-1894

Thanks Randall xox

Granny p: it reminds me of Dido and Aeneas when she sings 'Remember me'

...'but, aaaaah, forget my fate'. Yes, there are similarities. I've read that poem at more funerals than I can remember. (Missed National Poetry Day though - too busy writing!)

Pat said...

Zinnia: that's as it should be. Hope it's going well.

National Poetry Day?
No one told me.

"it's nice to think you might think of me sometimes when I think of you a lot"

Pat said...

Doccie: is that a poem? I thought you had eschewed poetry. Such a pity:(

I sent that poem to a guy to whom I was once engaged.

It's beautiful.

Pat said...

Judy: that's fascinating - thereby hangs a tale I'm sure.

What a beautiful poem! Those are my sentiments exactly...

:) Have a terrific Friday -- Michele sent me by!

Tanya: I wonder what caused her to write it.

What a beautiful poem. I personally am not poetically inclined, but my youngest daughter is. I recently posted a poem on my blog that she wrote for her sister. She wrote it last year at the age of nine and she received an award from school for it.

Hi Flleenie! I find poetry soothes my soul but can't write it for toffee so well done your daughter. You must be proud.
