Helen Mirren on the world cup results

Because you know if Britain had beaten America, what with BP, which to my mind stands for bloody p***-poor '

The actress was cut off by a round of applause from the American audience before continuing.
Risking a few raised eyebrows this side of the pond, she went on:
'I mean I don't think I could have come on this show. I would have been so embarrassed and mortified at being British that I think I would have had to cancel.'

The match was actually England versus US

Did you see the whole interview, Pat? She sure looks Fantastic!

Parsnip: I think she has blossomed with age.

Naomi; no just the bit when she was saying she would be mortified to be British. I nearly fell off my chair.

Dear Helen was playing to the crowd. Plus, don't forget, that she married a Yank. It'll be interesting to see how her comments are received back home.

Unbearable B: I decided not to comment but knew exactly what she was doing and it went down like a lead balloon here - in my house I mean.
A while ago she declared that British actors were lazy compared to Americans. I think it's a shame when expats feel the need to run down their mother country.

Pat... I think your right about how she has bloomed later with her looks.

I am all for being sensitive to another countries feeling but Soccer....
it is not by far our national sport. It was just fun to be caught up in something fun after all the bad stuff that has been happening to us.

I do not agree about what she said about British actors being lazy ? How? I missed that interview.
I love how I see big time British actors in TV shows and Movies then pop up in Theater... Americans are doing it some what but talk about lazy "star" actors we have them in spades !

cheers, parsnip
Go USA ! :p hee heeeeee

i missed it! :( i've enjoyed her acting for many years and would have liked to have seen her on letterman! xoxoxo

(i really should start taping things. *sigh*)

Frankly, I think it was somewhat toungue-in-cheek remark, Pat...I doubt that the outcome, had it been different, would have kept her off of Lettermans Show. But it obviously got your back up along with your dear MTL.....
This is probably Blasphemy, but I honestly didn't know what it meant that the two teams tied. This is not a sport I am particularly interested in---along with many other sports...lol....So....I didn't understand and still don't, what it means in the greater scheme of the whole tournement, if that is what you call it.

Parsnip and Naomi: just for the record I don't care deeply about football and so far haven't watched apart from on the news. That wasn't the issue. We just switched on to hear the 'mortified to be British' and I reacted robustly. Such a contrast to the grace of the American team but as Unbearable B says - 'she was playing up to the audience.' No excuse in my book.
I met her many years ago when she was the girlfriend of a young man I had nursed when he was a child. I'm going to shut up now.

Savannah: if you are like me you rarely have time to watch what you have taped.
I'm relieved to find that someone as cool as you can lose it when provoked - there's hope for me yet.xoxoxo

so, you read yesterday's originalpost, sugar? ;~D xoxoxoxoxo (and that was the cleaned up version!

HM (haha) was considered a very silly and stupid actress when I first joined the BBC and I coudl tell you some horrific stories about what she did in her costumes - I don't think she has changed much!

Goodness! Silly Helen.

Rosneath: you can whisper:)

Scarlet: thank you.

Pat...not to beat a dead horse...What I was asking is: What does the "tie" score mean in the over all competition? Here, in any game they play until the "tie" is broken. Obviously that is not what they do in this game. So...how do these "scores" fit in to the over all scheme of the competition?
As to HM....She is who she is,,,I don't know her at all, but I dare say, she is about "selling" her film.
I'd love to hear what you won't say any moe about, my dear. (lol)

Pat said...

Naomi:if a game is tied it is a draw - both scores are equal . We would say the score was nil nil - both scored no goals. As long as the scores are the same the game is tied. Believe me I'm no expert.
Re HM I think she is a very good actress but have never taken to her as a person and over the years nothing has changed.
Of course it isn't necessary to like a person whose oeuvre you admire. When you think of some of the most creative artists in all fields many of them were monsters. It's purely a personal thing and possibly a failing of mine.

Kevin Musgrove said...

Not so mortified as to renounce her damehood, though...

(I was wondering why Savannah's blog had an "adult" warning!)

Pat said...

Kevin: re HM - precisely!
Actually Savannah installed the 'adult ' warning herself to protect the faint of heart.

How does that work? Would a citizen of the United Kingdom think of himself as English, or Welsh, or Scottish, or just British?

There are certainly regional identifications here, but we're all at least the same nationality, though a man from Louisiana and a man from Maine might differ considerably.

Pat said...

BB: Its really a matter for the individual and can change from day to day. Both my husband and I are British but he is predominantly a Scot and there are days when I just feel English - as in 'English rose'.
I have Scots, Welsh and Irish blood and proud of it all;)
