WHO SAID (OR WROTE) THAT?

Aside

Time for some more memorable quotes. Just read them for the pleasure or you can opt to match the quote with the author. Gentleman’s agreement that we don’t google or similar. The clues are there. Good luck!

Quotes.

  1. Does it matter? – losing your legs?

For people will always be kind

2 Great God! This is an awful place.

3 We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.

4 Life is short but sweet.

5 If only you small girls would listen to me, I would make of you the crème de la crème.

6 I come from the haunts of coot and hern,

I make a sudden sally,

And sparkle out among the fern,

To bicker down the valley

7 Heaven cannot brook two sons, nor earth two masters

8 Give me chastity and continence, but not yet.

9 In nine cases out of ten a woman had better show more affection than she felt

10 Never throw stones at your mother,

You’ll be sorry for it when she’s dead,

Never throw stones at your mother,

Throw bricks at your father instead.

11 Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough,

To get it ready for the plough.

12 An actor’s a guy who, if you ain’t talking about him, ain’t listening.

#3... whenever i read the line i hear Kenneth Branagh's voice and can't help but think of mud, so i'm pretty sure it's Shakespeare -- Henry V.
#7 is Sophocles.
#8 has to be the saint, surely, in order to have been worth preserving for posterity? so, Augustin?
#9 is Austen. i've just be re-watching the BBC's P&P on DVD (say that 10 times fast!), so the line's fresh in my brain.
#12 couldn't be anyone but Brando.

And come friendly bombs is obviously Betjeman. I love him too.

Oh dear, I'm not at all hot on quotes. In fact, Quote Unquote is a programme that I will listen to just to be reminded of how little I know.

Would presume 12 (actor / listening quote) to be Brando, and I also like the 'brick at your father instead' one.

Johng: I'm mystified. What have I done now? Please tell me and put me out of my turmoil.

Shane: I like the brick one too.

Sam: You are the only one - thus far - who had given twelve answers so good on you. Whether they are correct or not , time will tell.

Well I know for a fact that St Augustin said: Great God! This is an awful place.

And I think it was Kenneth Brannagh [sp] who once uttered the immortal lines: Does it matter? losing your legs?
For people will always be kind

or was that Paul McCartney's missus?

Pat said...

Doc: you may say that but I couldn't possibly comment.! Yet! Just you wait 'enry 'iggins!

5. Spark
6. Tennyson
7. Sophocles

9. Austen
10. Behan
11. Betjman
12. Brando

The only one I'm sure of is Austen, the rest are guesses, based on clues, trial and error and other peoples guesses and I was inspired by Sam to go for all twelve.
