Trouble
Aside
Yesterday I installed Skype and an office thing which java kept nagging me about. Since then everything has gone haywire. I can't access my blog most of the time, and comments have the name of the sender and no message - either in my in-box or Dashboard. I have deleted the office thing but am at a loss to know how to get back to normal. Mozilla Firefox would seem to be the culprit.

Probably the best thing to do is a System Restore, which will set your computer system back to an earlier time before you made the changes. It won't affect your data, only the programmes and system.

Go to Help and Support, or Search from the Start button and see if you can find easy to follow instructions.

Kim: thank you. I have just tried that - giving four different dates and each time they say they can't. I'm wading through treacle at present but MTL says coffee is ready.

It's always easier to work things out after coffee.

Restoration can index card(form) b...that's why I you dispatch some lanes !

Kim: I 've just had a skype call from our son who leaves for Oz tomorrow - so at least that is working.

Pat said...

Crabtree: slowly I seem to be getting back to almost normal. Slowly.

Don't you just hate it when these things happen? I'm still struggling through some stuff with Adobe Flash Player...and I am not sure what Blogger is doiug....I cannot stand the stress of it all....! (lol)

Not sure who your mobile phone provider is, nor if you're happy with them, but a bit of info to store away for future is Three Mobile include Skype in their packages, so you can call anyone in the world on Skype with your mobile and it doesn't cost a penny.

Oh, but the pleasure of finally beating the software into submission and getting it to comply with every whim!

Naomi: at least it is a comfort to hear it is happening elsewhere and that isn't one's ineptmess solely. What bugs me is the messages which I don't understand.

Kim: I only use my mobile in dire emergency and it is almost never switched on. Both of us are a bit Luddite like that.

Nea: You surely don't mean me? This comment got through - obviously but two other of yours were in my in- box but no message. Spooky!

Not sure why they make it all so complex and inscrutable.

I'm bemused when I see BSOD Blue Screen of Death messages on public signage like train/airport/cashpoint displays. Illustrates that it happens to everyone.

Good luck fixing it. Around our way I seem to be the one that gets asked to figure out how to make it all work again (switch off count 10 switch on works surprisingly well).

Rashbre: I've been switching off all day. Have only just been able to get dashboard and found your and other comments hiding there. I've learned not to take it personally:)

I hope you get it sorted out, Pat. I have to say, in Firefox's defense, that since I downloaded it, I have not had one problem!

i defected from the world of pc to apple and it has been heaven, er touch wood ... commiserations x

I hope you get it sorted Pat. I'm useless at knowing anything about internet packages.

You could try a post toblogger help, someone may have had the same experience.

Super Pi,the comments reappear !

The patience is the jewel which decorates the crown of the wisdom.

To reassure ,yes Kenju, firefox function very well If we use the last version and especially, the updates !
Problems are more numerous on IE !
For Rashbre , start in mode without failure !
Oldoldlady ,effectively Flash d'Adobe must be downloaded on the official site ! Otherwise ??

Judy: must be me. Crabtree agrees with you:)

Mei del that's what all apple owners say:)

anna: it seems to be sorting itself except one of your comments has disappeared and no doubt it will turn up later on dashboard. the dear knows why.

Crabtree: Patience is a virtue - possess it if you can; seldom found in woman and never in a nman:) An old British saying.

Oh Lord, Pat, making changes is nerve-wracking, isn't it? It's never the things you think that will go wrong, either. Seemingly completely unrelated things go haywire and the whole thing seems so mysterious.

I wish I had something more helpful to offer. Good luck getting it sorted, gal.

Try to make a habit of always setting a "Restore Point" before installing a new program or downloading one from the net then if things go wrong it's easy to undo. I always set a Restore Point first thing every Monday just in case. I also make 2 backups of the days work every evening.

Having lost masses of work in the past I've learned the hard way!

Sam: you see what I mean about you being brave. Trouble is I get excellent advice but I'm not very good at following it.

Keith: I tried a restore session yesterday and each date I gave was rejected. It is very irritating and time consuming but at least I'm not totally snarled up now.

It's so dispiriting when these things go wrong. I hope it all sorts itself out soon.

Pat said...

Eryl : thanks- I'm quite looking forward to having a computer-less week from Saturday. Now I keep getting messages about lack of memory - whatever that means. My step-son insists it has nothing to do with skype but I now have a camera to down-load and for the time being it ain't getting done.

Well, things got worse here before they got better. My "Computer Wiz" in an attempt to fix the Adobe Flash Player problem, SCREWES EVERYTHING UP so badly that I couldn't use my computer, at all....!
He dud restore it all back to what it had been bedore, but there is still Blogger and it's priblems, and NO FLASH PLAYER.....! OY! LOL!

Pat said...

Naomi: I do feel for you; as our PM says at the moment the problem seems to be global - small comfort:)

gemmak said...

Eeekkk. Have you tried uninstalling Skype and Java. Skype had small issues with versions of Firefox prior to the current version (v3)....but even more with I.E.

Failing that...a re-format perhaps?

You probably didn't want to hear that!

Pat said...

Gemmak: thanks for the suggestions. At present I'm leaving it on the back boiler until I have someone here who knows what they are about. I came over and admired your photos - they blow up really well but - try as I may I couldn't leave a comment.
I'm looking forward to a computer- less week next week:)

Pat, never worry, darling. I don't even understand the advice most of the time.

Sam: it's got so bad tonight I
uninstalled Skype.
