The rest of themarbles

These are amazing.

He fared better than Oscar Wilde in Pere la Chaise cemetery in Paris.  Apologies to Vagabonde for the dubious spelling

Tom got a much better photo of the horse - maybe it was a different one.

It was  a hardship not being allowed to touch.

Ohyes this was the special horse.  don't ask me why.

Do admit - Aphrodite had a lovely bum

We were allowed to touch this as it was a repro.  not nearly so enticing as thefigures.

Just love the top ones Pat, they would look good in the garden :)

They are just wonderful. I am always amazed by how sculptors can made stone look like flowing fabric.

Lom: I think they would feel too confined here. My two have all their heads and limbs and stay fairly quiet:)

Judy :me too.

When I was a little kid in elementary school, I thought The Elgin Marbles were, literally, a leather sack full of shooting marbles. Sadly, I'm not kidding about that.

Re: my last comment. Swap SPRING for SPRINT. My fingers have a mind of their own.

These are all fantastic...I would want to touch them, too! It's overwhelming to know these are as old as they are....! Thanks Pat.....More Lovely Special Sculptures.

UB: you are not alone re the marbles.
I knew it was meant to be spring I just like to tease occasionally:)

Naomi: Tom kept a tight rein on me as far as touching the sculptures are concerned.

It has been so ingrained in me "Do Not Touch" that it would never occur to me to reach out. They are beautiful. Tell us, would you have touched Aphrodite's bum?

I have to go back there some day!

Granny Annie: in a word - yes!

Marjolein: you will I'm sure:)

Who nicked their heads! ;-)

The horse of Selene is indeed a special cast dear lady. It is unknown as to which actual equine body the head belongs as only the head is in fact in England, the body itself is still where it should be, at the Parthenon in Athens.

Wonderful photos you got. It's years since I've seen these, and, like UB, I expected them to be larger than average marble marbles when I was a child. Thus was confused when I actually saw them on a class trip.

Oh, these are beyond marvelous. The passion shown in such hard stone is wonderful.

I think this is the first time I have knowingly seen The Marbles - they do look rather impressive. They might at least have made a replica of Aphrodite's bum that everybody can touch.

John: target practice for the Turks - so they say.

Chef: I bow to your superior classical knowledge.
You should have been there.

Erykl: lucky you - although I must confess when I had the chance it would have been paintings I'd opt for. I'm a late marble fan.

Mage: I can't help wondering if , at night when all is quiet, they don't get off their plinths and dance their socks off. Such contained energy - about to burst forth.

Gadjo: that's a brilliant idea. Why should the caretakers have all the fun?

Were the horse's heads the inspiration for that scene in the Godfather? ;)

It's good that they've got a block with a horse's head handle.

[P.S. I've left you an award at my site]

Pat said...

KIM; it certainly reminded me of it.

Kevin: Albert and the lion?
I got all excited - two awards in one week but I can't find it.

Pat said...

Kevin: thank you - found it.
I don't deserve it

A slightly big bum for my taste, but still lovely. :D I would have found it hard not to touch. The statues in general I mean, not her bum.

They don't make bums these days like those top goddesses had!

Joey: in another life maybe I should work night shift in a museum.
I'm sure sculptors meant their works to be appreciated by sight and touch.

Simply amazing, beautiful. I'd want to touch too! What Mage said...passion. That's it, that's what we're looking at, the passion of the artists.

GG: and much more effective rather than on some distant fresco IMO.
