From the Horse’s Mouth.

Blondes make the best victims.  They’re like virgin snow that shows up the bloody footprints.
Alfred Hitchcock

I always say to anybody who’s going over to America for the first time,
”Whatever you do, go and see a popular mainstream film with a big audience”
Because people shout out.  You never get that in Britain.  Everybody’s so quiet, scared to laugh.  It’s like being in church.
Danny Boyle

The film director, in many instances, has to swallow somebody else’s decision about the final form of something.  It’s so hard as to be intolerable.
Trevor Nunn

Art is an experience, not the formulation of a problem.
Lindsay Anderson

Nervousness was never something I would ever associate with the Beatles ever.  A Hard Day’s Night was relatively unscathed by marijuana, but even then they were quite relaxed about it.
Richard Lester

If you make a fool of yourself for them then you usually get that back.  I think that there are points where you become so close to an actor, you know them so well, almost as well or better than their spouse.  You have to know them, warts and all.
Adrian Lyne

I don’t really say much about reviewers.  It’s a very tough job to get all of the depth of a movie all at once.
Roland Joffe

Whoever becomes the head of the National Theatre finds himself in a position like; that of Nelson’s column – pigeons dump on you because you’re there.
Peter Hall

It’s not easy to strap yourself down to a desk and bash on a keyboard when you know you can direct lots of  films, because directing films is fun and interactive and gregarious.  Writing isn’t.
Guy Ritchie

Very interesting !
Alfred Hitchcock should know, he always seemed to have a beautiful blond in most of his films.

cheers, parsnip

Parsnip: I just watched a documentary on him and he was vile to Tippi Hendren when she spurned his advances. His films were very watchable but IMO he was creepy.

ALL very very i9nteresting...! I loved Peter Hall's comment...lol....

Hitchcock was very creepy. And I guess he was very vindictive when it came to Tippi Hedrin. He had her under contract and it ended up, if she wouldsn't continue making pictures with him---She wasn't going to be able to make pictures with anyone! So...she had to sit out her contract---ehich was many years---NOT working as an actress. In all honesty, I cannot say it was a great loss to the Public, in my opinion--But, it certainly was terribly unfair to her.
She has devoted her life to saving Animals in jeopardy---Mostly Lions, Tigers, Cheetah's, etc....And this work is so incredibly important---Personally, I think this is her great great contribution to the world....!

Peter Hall got it right!

Naomi: I shudder when I think what power the predominantly male film makers had back then and some of the male stars who would use their position to abuse young starlets.
Not just in Hollywood - in Britain too,
Thank God for Women's Lib.

Hitchcock was talented, no doubt, but what a creep.

[I typed that out prior to reading the comments above, so we are all in agreement here.]

What's Guy Ritchie on about with all this talk of strapping himself to the desk?

I've worked in offices for decades now and never seen anyone strapped to a desk. Do desks come with straps, or do you have to bring your own? Do you do this strapping by yourself, or does someone do it for you???

If things get extreme can you lash yourself to a desk....
Such questions....

Macy: I blame Madonna:)

Happy New Year to you, YTL and all the family :)

Although I've never directed a film or written a screenplay, I can't help but feel I know exactly what Guy Richie means...

Kim: and to you and yours.xox
I suppose you could liken it to the fun you have working with your subjects in the studio and the sheer hard work alone in the lab -or wherever you develop the shots.
