The Voice UK
I’m a fan and particularly enjoy watching and listening to
the panel: will.i.am, Jessie j, Danny o’ Donoghue and the great Tom Jones. Mind you only one of them can I completely
understand (no prizes for guessing which one) but they are fun to watch.
I’ve been surprised at how ‘pitchy’ some of the singers
are. That’s Voice Speak for being what
we used to call flat.
Each of the panel coaches a team of singers and they
gradually get whittled down by both the viewers and the panel. It gets emotional as the singers form a bond
with their mentors and it must be awful having to choose between equally
talented singers.
Two of the singers I particularly like are Tyler James who
was a friend of Amy Whitehouse and used to sing with her – he’s a little like a
young Bob Dylan, and Bo Bruce whose soulful eyes reveal her sadness at her
mother’s serious illness.
There are a few serious contenders but no obvious outright
winner so far.

I certainly do not have perfect pitch but I can hear a singer go flat and it really grates on my nerves.
Granny Annie: awful isn't it?
Sometimes, when the band or track is too loud it can 'shift' the pitch in yer head! But usually it's just bad pitch. :¬0

... and not just flat - one of the girls who exited on Friday was so sharp I cut myself listening to her!I wish I could say that I enjoy The Voice but I really don't. I do however confess to being a great fan of this year's American Idol - three of the four remaining finalists are simply brilliant - they sing in tune and they are just teenagers! Can't wait for Thursday!
I'm afraid I don't "get" all of these singing competition shows---THE VOICE, which we have here---I watched once and have no real interest in watching ever again. AMERICAN IDOL---NO!!! And then there is "THE X FACTOR"...NO, to that, too.....Everyone sounds alike to me! Sorry about that Pat....
Incidentally, it's Amy Winehouse, my dear, not Whitehouse..
As to "sharp" and "flat"...I cannot bear either one!!(lol)
We have The Voice here in the US too but I keep forgetting to turn it on. I think one reason is one of the judges Christina Aguilera, keeps turning every comment away from the contestant to herself and her career. It is so mememememe that I cringe.
I did see part of one show last week and I happened to like two of the singers.
Gosh I haven't seen Tom Jones for a long time and he looks so different with all that white hair. Took me a second to recognize him.
Since I really only know two of the judges I guess Tom is the one you understand ?
cheers, parsnip
Map: that's interesting.
Keith: it's the only talent showI've watched in an age and I'm enjoying it.
Naomi: I got bored with talent shows but am enjoying this one - much to do with the panel who all feel passionately about the music and it's catching.
Sorry about misnaming Amy's surname. I make a lot of mistakes these days
Parsnip: yes Tom is the one I understand. I'm glad he has stopped dyeing his hair. He's got his dignity back.
Have ANY of these shows lead to a legitimate music career? I know that early iterations of American Idol launched Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. And, of course, there's Susan Boyle. But most of them just wind up on the ash heap, don't they?
I saw Tom Jones perform in an Atlantic City casino once. Fantastic show.
We're not watching The Voice so I can't really have an opinion.
Like another of your commenteers, I saw Tom Jones in Las Vegas, and he did put on a good cabaret style show.
UB: Leony Lewis and Will Young leap to mind but you are right, many do fall by the wayside.
I suspect some of The Voice contestants are already in the music business and if it gives a boost to their career who can carp.
Lucky you to see Tom in his heyday.
Rashbre: you were lucky - he's not doing them anymore.
i do watch idol occasionally - meaning every other season or so - but mostly because my sister enjoyed it when she was alive and loved to talk about it - so i watched in order to converse with her - however, i must say that this season's joshua ledet is absolutely fabulous! no, i mean it - fabulous - and i do not use that word lightly - he sings with a voice and a spirit far beyond his years - magnificently! anyway - i also have seen tom jones perform - but for goodness sake, cannot remember where - and yes, there was panty tossing to be done [but not mine!] by the audience -
Jenean: it is most fun when you can chat with someone about it. Not MTL's scene.
Glad you're enjoying it, Pat.
Eryl: the kiss of death: the minute I laud it the figures fall off:)
