A Handbaaaaaaag?

Aside

OscarWilde's Lady Bracknell would be horrified at the prices people seem prepared to pay for a handbag these days. Below is my favourite; it is cylindrical in shape with plenty of room for all the usual stuff, plus my umbrella , camera and mobile phone. There are separate pockets for car keys, house keys and lipstick and compact and an extra two I have yet to find a use for. It is frequently admired and onlythe other day they hygienist said it was just what she was looking for and had spent £150 on something she didn't like as much. I bought it two years ago in Truro in a half price sale and then as it was a special day a further
£2 was taken off.

Total cost £10.

Women and handbags/purses are like me and tents. I'm still looking for the perfect one.

That bag lokks lovely. A good mix of pretty and practical. I would never dream of spending a lot of money on a handbag (much to my daughter's disgust).
I like a handbag with lots of compartments and once I've learned where everything is ( or should be) I'm loath to change until it virtually falls to pieces.

Smashing buy, Pat. I like it a lot.

I have a friend who bought her daughter a $4000 Kate Spade handbag last year for Christmas. Her daughter's 12! I'm a 33 year old woman and I have never had a bag that cost more than $100. Nor do I want one. There are some really ugly-ass bags out there with price-tags in the thousands. I just can't justify to myself that amount of money for a bag.

And what the hell kind of society are we in when a 12 year-old wants a bag for Christmas?

Sorry but being a man, I don't understand bags...

I'm not really in a position to comment!

My best handbag story is this: I had seen a beautiful bag in a shop in Glasgow but didn't buy it as it was still four hundred quid in a half price sale! Anyway I told my husband about it and he told his staff - all young women - and somehow a rumour erupted that I had actually bought it. A few weeks later I was out in town and met one of his 'girls' who took my handbag from me and said with awe 'is this it? It's gorgeous!' I had to tell her 'no' that this particular bag cost twenty five pence in a car boot sale. She thrust it back at me as if it was a diseased corpse! Poor lass.

I love your bag, it's a great colour and I particularly like the dangly bits.

I do wonder what is to become of us with people willing to spent two months salary on a prop. That said, if I ever make a penny of my own I will be sorely tempted to get myself a Mulberry bag in conker brown leather. They look like they'll last forever.

Quell Bargain!!! (lol)
Very pretty purse, Pat....and that is a fabulous price! I am appalled at the price of EVERYTHING like this now---Bags, Shoes, etc....
So, you did fabulously!

Sorry Pat, I know nothing about bags, but it looks nice.

Randall, I have found the perfect tent though. It's a Hilleberg Keron 4 GT, I've had it for over ten years now. It has been on numerous class trips sheltering teenagers and toddlers from wind, rain, frost and mosquitoes. I haven't tested it in the snow yet, but I'd like to.I can set it up on my own in minutes and take it down and pack it with ease, whilst keeping one eye on the two tots and the other on the thirty teens. I may be a little biased as they are designed by a local company, but after ten years of hard service it still looks like new.

I agree with Sam! I am appalled at the prices people pay for them. My favorite bag was $80 at TJ Maxx, which was supposed to be half of the reg. price. I have been carrying it for 6 years now, and it is such good quality that it doesn't even look worn. I have about 12 bags in different colors, but I always go back to this one.

I am very particular about mine. I don't want too many pockets because I forget which one I put things into. I don't like hardware on it - no gold or silver - because they scratch and make it look older sooner. I only like one strap and preferably a shoulder strap and it has to be just the right length for my body. You see why I carry a bag for so long? If I like it - another one like it is hard to find....LOL

Nice bag lady.

It's the 17th of the month, so I'm having a 'Refuse to Use Commas Day'.

Randall: look down at Nea's comment; she may have the answer.

Sablonneuse: you and ne both

Sam: happily it's a vice that's passed me by:)

Cream: but I'll bet you know a gel who does:)

Johng: I'm happy to hear it.

Eryl: I'm not entirely virtuous. Today it was so cold I wore my mink coat that's almost forty years old and still looks like new.

Naomi: I'm glad you approve:)

NEA: I'm sure Randall will be interested. Have told him to scroll down. I'm surprised you haven't tested it in the snow. You certainly have the opportunity.

CQ: thank you. I'll be over to have a look.

Judy : you are obviously a bag connoisseur:)

Shane: cheeky! Actually I'm getting problems with apostrophes and used who'se over at Kims tonight.

Lovely bag, Pat, I like the flower at the side. I have a few handbags [inexpensive] that I change according to where I'm going, what I'm wearing. Vain me. But I'd never spend a lot to buy one.

I've seen some in mags. that cost US $1,000 or more. Wow. I think of all the poor children that can feed.

I may never carry a handbag, but my equivalent is a jacket. I've always prefered jackets with loads of pockets - one for my wallet, another for gloves, another for a woolly hat, another for keys, another for a notepad and pen, etc.

I always struggle in the summer when it's too warm to wear one...

GG: it tickles me pink that people actually admire it.

DQ: I went through a phase of using calico bags which my sister used when doing various exhibitions - in the summer. They were light, roomy and washable. As you can see fashion handbags have really passed me by.

Kim: just like MTL. He is dotty about pockets. And stuffs them. On a trip to America - in the first flush of love when my wish was his command, he broke the habit of a lifetime and used a cylindrical zipped bag and lost it with all in.
APBs were sent out and we finally found it outside the door of our relatives house where we had dumped it after getting out of the car- with jet lag. So I lost that battle!
Hw was ecstatic when he discovered trousers with extra pockets at knee length. Shirts must have breast pockets.

I have this dreadful red leather backpack purse that I've hauled through the US, British Columbia, France & India! It's really horrible looking but I love it. I finally put it up on a shelf because my daughter said, "Mom, don't use THAT purse anymore."

So I started looking in the clearance racks at a store called Target and found really good deals! I've often wanted to part with precious cash to buy a fancy Coach bag, but I just can't. I think of the money and think... ah.. that's a half week's worth of groceries!

So the most I'll spend now is about $30.00 and it has to last a very long time!
