As you can see these steps are covered in detritus from the pines.
This morning I carefully managed to clear them...
and found these strange objects. They are hollow, with a delicate papery skin and give off a powdery puff if you damage the surface. They look like a cluster of little bells - an inch to two inches in size. I have never seen anything quite like them before but I'll bet someone knows what they are.
