The Misfit

.
It was Joey's Post that made me remember it http://llcooljoe01.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/be-yourself-unless-it-offends-someone.html

When Margaret was visiting the other week on a blisteringly hot day we decided to drift down to the town and try out the new Costas.  There are tables outside with an excellent view down the Avenue and shaded.  Even so we plumped for hats - mine an old straw and Margaret's denim.
It turned out to be a most pleasant way to have a gossip, catch up,  watch the passers - by with lots of additional holiday makers and test the iced lemon tea.
Later Margaret went up the hill to visit a neighbour who I didn't know.
The friend said she had spotted us at Costas.

'Did your friend have on a white layered skirt,' she asked?
'Yes,' she was told, 'why?'

'Well you just looked as if you didn't belong.'

What did she mean?  Neither of us were flashing the flesh; we were comfortably dressed and thus able to keep cool in heat wave.  Any idea?

What a strange thing for that person to say. Belong where? With whom? What difference does it make how you were dressed while you were sitting there visiting?

I am sure this is absolutely nothing to even think twice on. I think your outfit is lovely!

J: You may well be right. Apparently I have met her but have no memory of it.

Ponita: I don't know about lovely but it is the coolest(temperature wise) garb I've got.

Too lovely for Costas!

I take it to mean Margaret was dressed more casually than you. But still, it's a weird comment. Go on up the hill, smash down her door, and demand an explanation!Actually, she's probably the kind of person you should forget you know!

P.S., I tried to italicise "should" but I've forgotten how to use the HTML tag and my effort was rejected.

What people think about the way anyone looks says far more about them than it does about the person being looked at

Well I hope she is a good friend (to your friend) because that was just rude. Or maybe came out wrong ?
May she "meant" to say how stylish you looked and how maybe (?) your friend was more casually dressed ?

Best guess I have.
cheers, parsnip

Love the outfit, perfect for afternoon tea on a hot day. I think it's just that very few people 'dress' for the occasion anymore. I don't know if it's laziness, or people have just forgotten how too, or perhaps it's just the world we live in. Or perhaps she was just a little jealous of your style, (nasty thought I know).

You have great style.

Take no notice.

Scarlet: the great thing about Minehead is there is no norm.

Jack and Elaine: I am reminded of the poem:
WHEN I AM AN OLD WOMAN I SHALL WEAR PURPLE
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit:)

Kim: I'll drink to that:)

Parsnip: the way Margaret told me was WE looked as if we didn't belong. Maybe she was being kind.

Helen: I was really dressing for the temperature and that was really successful. Fine lawn is cooler than even linen and cotton.
Thank you for your kind words:)

Have to agree with Kim Ayres. You shouldn't judge people by what they are wearing - unless they come very inappropriately dressed for a specific occasion of course.
Generally speaking, though, nowadays everyone is much more relaxed about dress codes, don't you think?
Oh, and I think your outfit looks charming.

Thanks for the shout out, I've just arrived back in the UK. I agree with Helen, most people look so casual these days, and how often do you see people in hats nowadays? I'm sure the comment referred to the fact you stood out, but is that such a bad thing?

I'm here thinking how your outfit looks so hot-weather-stylish, and maybe others don't dress as stylish, and maybe it's because you're covered [very smart to cover from sun], and maybe others dress not so covered?

What a straaaaange comment.

Who decides who does and doesn't belong?

That outfit looks very stylish, very cool and very summery, Pat. What a strange comment from (presumably a strange woman ?). We suspect a touch of 'green eye' there.

P.s. Ann says she covets that blouse!

I'm with Ms. Scarlet, too elegant for Costas :)

That woman sounds rude and judgemental....Is she some kind of "Style" Garu? I love what you had on and even if I didn't, it's none of my damn business!
I LOVE being able to dress anyway I want and if someone else doesn't like it---that is THEIR problem. As so many others have said----you are a very stylish lady, whatever you might wear.....It's something that comes from inside you, dear Pat....If that woman can't see that---well then, she has a problem.I wouldn't give her another thought.

That person needs to go to Los Angeles. I was astonished by the variety of clothing worn in practically every venue. That is true of everyplace in California. My goddaughter would laugh every time I put on something and asked "will this be okay?"

That was odd. I like that skirt and blouse. Were you supposed to be in tweeds? LOL

Maybe you looked very elegant? In contrast to the holidaymakers. Think this is perfect outfit for town and around.
Mind you some people like to be underminers don't they?

All: thank you for your kind encouraging comments. I suppose the truth is that my self-confidence has faltered as a by product of losing MTL. He was my champion, my litmus and he was so easy to please visually. Just so long as you eschewed the dreaded spots which he couldn't abide.
Must get back on track:)

I agree with all those who said "forget about her!" She does sound a tad rude... ;) I totally understand about YTL being your "style guide" because the MITM does the same thing for me, sugar. He encourages more color in my wardrobe! xoxoxox
