I've always had a problem with Schopenhauer and your quote crystallizes some of my thinking. "Compassion," while laudable if it based on empathy for others, seems to be used more as a justification for abandoning moral absolutes than otherwise. Perhaps its the post modern view of compassion which is the problem, but I think Schopenhauer started the ball.

I loved seeing Mr. & Mrs. Obama with The Queen....It made me feel really good that we finally have a President, again, that I can be proud of.

I do like that Obama chappy, and now I must go in search of a video of this speech. Sometimes not having a tv is a pain, if it weren't for you and Scarlet I'd have no idea what to look out for.
Off topic:
I picked up a copy of THE MAN WITH THE WOODEN HAT. I had *no idea* it was about our old friend. Just started it. Another fantastic read. You wonder why she married him at all! According to the author bio, there's a third book out there with Old Filth in it.
