Boys on bikes in Yorkshire floods

The Dunkirk spirit lives on in Yorkshire. People have had to leave their homes knowing that most of what they possess is ruined. Many of them are being housed in village halls. One white-haired old lady with a sweet face was asked if she had insurance.

'No I haven't. I'm sorry.' she said to the reporter as if apologising to her.

' Then why ae you still smiling?' she was asked.

'Well I've still got me!'

Yes, I saw that too. It makes you hope that some millionaire with a few thousand quid to spare might have been watching as well and sent a donation - but all the same that lady had something money could never buy, her wonderful outlook on life.

Sablonneuse: it reminded me so much of the dear old girls I knew in Lancashire as a child - sweetly accepting whatever fate flung at them.

Makes you proud to be British. I think your generation, Pat, and those before you did British stoicism a lot better than we younger ones do. It's an admirable trait.

Although it's a horrible way to come by it, I think British hardiness might be on the up and up again after the recent attacks in London and Glasgow. As far as I can tell, people have been coping very philosophically with all the disruption and uncertainty.

What a lovely little old lady! She's the business.

Sam: lovely to hear from you. I have been thinking about you - especially after the air-port horror. Wherever you are, keep safe and I hope things are getting better. I'm just now reading 'Salt in my porridge' by Angus MacVicar - lovely bed-time reading and embodies the spirit you speak of. I always think my generation try to emulate my mother's. Now they rally were the business.xoxox

Anna: not my picture of course.
Report in DT 'and now we've got a report from our local councillor saying the sluice hadn't been cleaned up because of the great crested newts.'
