Reminder

Flu' jab. We had ours yesterday. Don't neglect it if it is relevant to you.
My American friend Unbearable Banishment (see side bar my linkage isn't working) has just had so bad a dose that his little daughter said:
'Are you going to die Dad?'
Fortunately UB is young and healthy and has recovered. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Do you mean his "Flu Jab" was so bad?? OR, that he didn't get the shot and got the Flu?? Sorry my dear...it wasn't clear to me.

Lady, I think he didn't listen to Pat and didn't get the flu shot
:-) or is it :-(

I didn't know flu shots really work to prevent the flu, I thought that with so many viruses around, how can one shot prevent all those other meanies from getting to a body?

Naomi; sorry to mislead you: he had flu'.

I've had mine!! This is the first year I've been an At Risk group.
Got to be some benefits :)

I'm not old enough to have a flu jab yet.

I've been getting the flu shot since 1998, when I was exposed to the actual flu on a ward I worked where four patients were diagnosed on the same day. And none of them had been on isolation! I've never had the flu so I'd have to say it works. Definitely worth the jab and a couple days feeling worn out as you make antibodies.

@Rog: The flu isn't an old person's disease. It can hit anyone. Just that the elderly and those with chronic illnesses are more at risk for getting it. Here in Canada, everyone can get the shot for free. And I believe they have the H1N1 virus in it now too. (I think... don't quote me on that as I have not checked yet, but recall reading it somewhere.)

Macy: good - flu' is the last thing you need.

Rog: read Ponita's comment!!!!

Ponita: I felt a bit ropey for a couple of hours last night but OK now. Just as well as we go away on Saturday.
We also get it free and the surgery take it very seriously and have a special clinic.

This will be my last season without a flu shot. I NEVER got one and rarely became ill, so over the years I arrogantly developed a false sense of invincibility. Six little words from my daughter was all the convincing I needed. I'll never forget the look on her face. Awful. Not only am I sold on the jab from now on, I'm requesting a double dose.

Hubby and I had flu last Christmas, I wouldn't wish it on the devil!

Oh dear, I'm afraid I have Rog's attitude, but now I will think about it.

Yep, we were jabbed last week. Our doctor said it was just in time as flu cases are being reported already.

It never matters for me. I wind up getting something every year anyway.

Cheers.

oh, so sorry to hear of UBs recent bad bug - i've not had any problems since i regularly began taking the shot every single year some years ago - and just fyi, if i'm not mistaken, the injections no longer carry any of the live bug so there should be no aftermath of symptoms at all - not sure about the H1N1 thing - but great reminders to us all pat - i'm late getting mine this year! need to run not walk - 'tis the season upon us! have a great day there across the way!

I'm not entirely convinced I have to say. My sister gets a flu jab every year and then still manages to get the flu up to three times (her immune system doesn't work all that well it seems). My mother never gets a flu jab and never gets the flu either. But my family is weird when it comes to medication anyway (jabs or pills or anything really - I'm allergic to aspirin for example).

Re: gypsy's comment about the vaccine. It contains NO live virus and does have the H1N1 in it as well this year. It is possible to feel a bit off for a few hours or a day or so, but that is not because you got the flu from the shot. It's just your immune system working overtime to pump out antibodies to the vaccine. You might also have a bit of a tender spot on your arm. All minor compared to getting the actual flu. Just ask UB!

@UB: You can still get the shot this year. In fact, now that you've recovered, you should, because there are several versions of the flu included in the vaccine and you only had one. You don't need daughter standing over you, asking if you are going to die again...
